JEFFERSON COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
June 28, 2007 7:00 pm
Chairwoman Betty Watkins opened the meeting with the Pledge to the American Flag. Ten people were in attendance.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read. A correction was made in the amount in the treasury. No expenditures or deposits were made.
Several members of the Jefferson County Democratic Party attended the Habitat for Humanity Day on June 9. Betty was pleased with the turn-out and believes that we made a difference and received good publicity in the Standard Banner.
Betty reported on Jackson Day in Nashville which was held at Bicentennial Mall with good music and barbecue. Bill Richardson spoke as well as the Governor. Betty met with Mike McWharter who is thinking of running for governor when Bredeson’s term ends.
Vice-Chair Joe Pickel and 5th District Rep Deanna Pickel announced that they will be moving out of the county as soon Deanna starts a new job July 30. They need someone to take over maintaining the website. Joe will see if Pat Garrow is interested.
Joe Pickel will continue plans for the annual picnic to be held at 5 pm on August 18. Betty will book the band for the event at an expected cost of $100. She will also notify the New Market officials to reserve the park for that date. Kim McMillen, previous majority leader in the statehouse, will spoke and a representative for Senator Obama will speak. Barbecue and cole slaw for the event will be purchased from the treasury and volunteers will bring the other items. We need to be there at 4 pm to set up. Deanna will man a table to sell buttons and sign up new Democrats. Betty will bring name tags and will have people put their district and their name on the tags. An e-mail will be sent by Betty to remind everyone and Hank and Betty will run an ad in the newspaper to advertise the event.
Betty will attend a state party event on July 7 at Calhoun’s on the Lake in Lenoir City. Anyone may attend. There will be training on getting out the vote. If anyone is interested in attending, let Betty know.
Chairwoman Betty Watkins distributed copies of elected offices within the cities of Jefferson County, the county, state, and federal offices and the year each elected official’s term expires. Feb. 5 is the date for the primary in Tennessee, county delegate selection will be Feb. 9 and district selection is Feb. 23.
